Donated on December 10
24 cans of kittenfood
4 bags of kittenfood
2 bottles of laundry detergent
4 (more) gallons of bleach
1 package of Viva towels (reusable)
3 bags of kitty litter
1 package of cat toys (Balls with the bells in them...)
2 bottles of Dawn dishwashing detergent
We had to back the car up to the shelter door and unload into a small hallway. Then I parked the car, and Todd went in and told them we had things for them. I think they were quite surprised at how much was being donated.
However... my totals on this is 76 items. And my name count (even counting myself, Todd, and our two cats...) is at 59 names. 45 "humans" and 14 cats. *g* (Yes, Zanne, I remembered your cats names and I put them on the list... so there!)
If you want to check if your name got recorded...

Okay.. that's 15 items I'm over for names, if I count the cats as "names" as well. I've got to admit, I'm kinda shocked. When I first thought of this idea, I thought my problem would be trying to afford enough items in relation to names. I mean, all I'm asking is that you leave a comment, I put your name on the list and that allows me the "right" to donate another item. I should have held back stuff today, according to the rules I set up, but I didn't, because I didn't think it was right to hold back on the shelter because I didn't get all the "names" I thought I would.
There is still other stuff the shelter needs. More of everything I've already donated, and they've added pine cleaner to the list of stuff too. There is a good sale on pine cleaner at Ocean State Job Lot... I'd like to be able to donate a few bottles of that. Yes, the shelter is getting lots of donations, but as they explained, they expect Christmas donations to last all through the year, because that's about the only time they are really remembered, at least with things other than food. They have a few workers who do get "paid" to do this, but most of what they earn, they put right back into the shelter, to keep it going. It's a damned good shelter. They take excellent care of the kitties and never is a cat put to sleep, unless it is beyond medical hope. They have one cat there, that has been there for years, and has a lot of medical problems. (fortunately, none are contagous) they have spend lots of money to make sure the cat is as healthy as possible, and lots of time in caring for the cat. They will not put the cat down, even though there are not many people who would adopt a cat in poor health, but this place does not believe in destroying any cats. This cat will probably live out the remander of his life in the shelter, where most place would have put him to sleep by now. That's the kind of place this shelter is.
I know people are busy this time of year. I know people have a lot on their minds... but I've lost track of the amount of requests I've seen for addresses so people can send me Christmas cards through LJ... I'm not asking for your address... I'm not asking you to spend the money on postage to send me a card. I'm asking that you leave a comment to either this entry, This entry or even this one That's it. Then I put you on the list... for every "name" that's another "item" I donate, be it a can of food, a bottle of bleach, or something that the shelter can use to keep going.
I know some of you have been "returning" the idea and donating to your local shelters and that's wonderful. You don't know how happy that makes me, thinking that cats/dogs/people are getting helped in other areas, not just my own "hometown" But, even if you don't want/have the time/money/whatever to donate to a local shelter or food bank, that's okay too. I'll still donate one needed item for every name.
And no, this is not some weird little contest I'm having with myself to see how many people will leave a comment in my journal. Besides, in my mind, asking for comments for something like this doesn't count as "real" comments. Real comments are because I write an entry that is so interesting in some way, that people feel obligated to say something about it. Begging for comments doesn't count. *g*
I've already snagged an extra shift at work next week. If I get enough names, my plans are that every cent I make in tips that shift will go to buy more items. Don't make me have to spend the money on something else! Let me spend it on the cats!
