VC Andrews fanfiction.
Dear lord, her books read like fanfiction anyway, even when they're written by the author herself/himself. (Yes, I know, the real VC Andrews is dead and now her stuff is written by Andrew Niederman) and they aren't all that bad... okay, I'm wrong, yes they are. The main characters are all pretty much the same person. Always quiet, generally good girls (unless the point is to make them "bad girls") rarely popular, but always very beautiful, with perfect figures and lovely hair. And they are all soooo terribly "misunderstood." It's a mean, cruel, rotten, world for any main subject of a VC Andrews book, and the sooner you know it the better.
I have yet to read one and not scream, "MARY SUE! MARY SUE!" Not because I believe any original charcter is a Mary Sue, (I'm not that blinded. Otherwise, every single book of original fiction would be nothing but Mary Sue) but because the main character in the book always just screams it. Everyone's always picking on poor little Cathy/Rain/Melody/Heaven/whoever it is this week... and no one realizes the poor girl is just a victim!
The VC Andrews books are like... well, like cotton candy. Overly sweet, overly sticky, and five seconds after you've finshed one of them, you forget about it. Writing fanfiction about fluff like that... well, why not just create your own series? Make up some milktoast beautiful heroine who is either very rich or very poor. Has a good looking male relative that has the hots for her, and go from there. No need to tribute it to VC Andrews, just crank it out and call it your own. You can claim VC Andrews was you "inspiration" later.
I guess it really bothers me that there are people out there who aspire to have their writing be "just as good!"
So, I'm off to gouge my eyes out.
